“The ‘Masters of Horror’ anthology is a collection of dark, disturbing and macabre tales which cover a wide range of subjects. On offer for your reading pleasure are tales of vampires, ghosts, bloody murderous revenge and an alien (I think!) There’s a vampire tale, ‘Truth Hurts’ by Carole Gill, which offers up a twist on the usual image of the undead. Scattered throughout the book are tales of revenge, such as ‘Wounds’ by Joseph Mulak where a family have to live with the horror of the death of their son, ‘The Ladies of the Scale’ by B.L. Morgan which starts out as a straightforward tale about death then turns into something fantastical where the main character has to endure a living hell and ‘Something Unpleasant’ by Richard Barnes about a long dead creayure exacting revenge on a modern day horror. This idea was a very good one. It involves breaking the “Fourth Wall“, which is the invisible wall that separates the audience and the characters they are watching. I bought this book based on the author’s rep more than the idea behind it. It is a grand idea and the first line is tempting: Burn this book. What an opening!
